PART 12 - RECENT UPDATES

October 2014 -- Oct 2014 from HIS eAlert published Sept 22, 2014:  Dr. Ralph Edwards looked at data connecting ALS to use of statin drugs. ”He used to work as director of the World Health Organization's Drug Monitoring Center, where his job was to examine adverse events, looking for any "signal" that connected side effects with drugs. What he found was an alarming number of people who had either ALS or something very similar -- and who were taking statins.”  He published this information in a small journal published in New Zealand after not being accepted for publication in a main stream journal.

June 2014--- In the July issue of Life Extension magazine, in the article ”Creatine Reduces Markers of Aging”:   creatine supplementation of ALS patients was demonstrated to boost  muscle power.  Dosing was at 20 grams/day for seven days, followed by 3 grams/day for up to six months which improved voluntary muscle contractions at the knee and elbow in 70% and 50% of participants respectively.  Improvements were temporary and wore off after 6 months.  Effect may be due to reducing brain levels of glutamate limiting excitotoxicity.
August 2013-  For Dr. Steenblock's treatments see

August 2013 - See dental information at http://www.hugginappliedhealing.com/Al's.php

Nov 2012 – The Bioflavonoid Luteolin has been demonstrated to protect microglial cells found in the brain from destruction from inflammatory cytokines.   This in turn prevents the neuron from dying.  This information comes from Dr. Robert Jay Rowen’s Second Opinion newsletter of January 2012.  “Little
Known Bioflavonoid Protects Your Brain from Inflammation.”    Dr. Rowen’s article includes an anecdote about a person with ALS who has been using Luteolin since 2001 successfully.  Dr. Rowen recommends 10 mg of luteolin a day.

2012 -  Consuming Shark Fin Soup may lead to Alzheimer's and ALS.  This information comes from Dr. Nan Kathryn Fuchs PhD of the Women's Health Letter in the June 2012 issue.   People with ALS have high levels of BMAA in their brains (healthy people have low levels).  BMAA is Beta-Methylaminio-L-alanine.  People consuming shark fin soup have been found to have high levels of BMAA in their brains.  Dr. Fuchs recommends not consuming shark or shark cartilage supplements.  See also Kiyo Mondo, et al "Cyanobacterial Neurotoxin B-N-Methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) in Shark Fins" Marine Drugs, 2012; 10 (2): 509 DOI:10.3390/md10020509.

2012:  Lida Mattman Ph.D.i,n her book    Cell Wall Deficient Forms: Stealth Pathogens has research associating ALS with Lyme disease.  I have addressed this topic in my blog for September 2012.

2012- GMO foods & ALS- People suffering from ALS have an elevated IL-13.  IL-3 is a cytokine(interleukin) which is generated by the immune system to signal an immune response.   When people eat Bt modified foods, it has been shown by studies done in Quebec that the human digestive tract does not completely destroy the Bt and Bt is detected in human blood.  Studies of mice being fed Monsanto's genetically modified Bt corn have elevated levels of IL-13.  Bt corn was first introduced to the market in 1996.  If you eat organic corn, you will avoid eating GMO Bt containing corn.  See www.mercola.com "The Lies behind Genetically Modified Organism(GMO) July 03, 2012.

Pulsed Electro Magnetic Pulse Treatment:
A study of three patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis were treated with a pulsed magnetic field administered by a Magnobiopulse apparatus. Given three times a week for approximately 75 sessions to achieve maximum benefits, all three experienced beneficial effects.
